What do you do when your heart’s in two places?
You’re feeling great but you’re torn inside.
You feel the love but you just can’t embrace it,
When you found the right one, at the wrong time.“Mr Schue - I think - I’m -” Rachel sighed, taking a few frustrated steps towards him. “I’m in love with you.”
Will’s face fell as he turned to her fully, the gravity of her words not quite hitting him. She had been acting strangely for a few weeks (now that he thought about it, ever since he had proposed to Emma), but he hadn’t thought for a second that this would be the cause.
“You’re in love with me?” he stammered, his voice cracking as he spoke. “Rach, I thought this was over two years ago. You’re seventeen, you’re with Finn, I thought we were done with this.”
She closed her eyes briefly, a jolt of fear rushing through her. He hadn’t sounded angry, but he could hardly be happy with her.
“I can’t help it,” she said with a light shrug. “I wish I could.” She paused, taking another step towards him, so they were slightly too close. “I won’t do anything,” she continued, “I think I’ve outgrown cleaning your apartment and gold star ties.”
Will’s tongue darted out to wet his lips and inhaled heavily. “Good.”
“I just wanted you to know.”
“And now I do.”
Rachel didn’t move. She didn’t want to leave until she had some kind of response, some kind of neutral ground between them - he was clearly angry, and she needed that to change. It would just leave to sleepless nights if it didn’t.
“Will -” she said unthinkingly, reaching out to touch his arm.
As soon as she did he snapped, turning to her angrily so she stumbled backwards, away from him, the tears that had been threatening to spill now running down her cheeks. “Don’t,” he said harshly. “Don’t call me Will, don’t touch me, just don’t.”
Instantly Rachel ran away, giving in and bolting. She wasn’t prepared for him to react like that, couldn’t bring herself to stay with him anymore. She was broken.
Will sat down with a thump and ran his hands through his hair. He forced himself to think of Emma, his beautiful fiancee. Not Rachel. His student. A girl.
This was twisted.
